Retractable Highlighters — A Great Idea
What a great idea! This set of eight Sharpie Accent highlighters have a retractable feature – so no cap to misplace. Why didn’t someone think of this a few decades ago? The ink is also non-smear, and I tried everything to test that claim, including rubbing butter and oil on the highlighted line in an attempt to recreate greasy fingers turning pages while studying.
Those are the positives. The negatives are the severe angle of the relatively small head requires constant attention to the position the highlighter is held or a small line may be drawn, when a wider one is desired. Additionally, some of the ink colors are dark and the highlighted writing beneath them hard to read. To illustrate this I have attached a photograph under Customer Images. I used each of the eight colors in the set all highlighting the same question.
Overall I like this set. The pluses are the retractable feature and the non-smear ink. The negatives are the dark hue of some of the highlighter shades and the awkward to position nib. Finding the correct way to hold the highlighter, and then maintaining it is needlessly difficult. For my use, I would prefer the nib be offered in either a distinct point or a large flat angle while still retaining the terrific retractable feature. And, l will use the dark inked highlighters as markers, but since this set is advertised as a set of highlighters, it is unfortunate that all eight can’t be used for that purpose.
My favorite highlighters, not without issues
I love these highlighters, and won’t buy any others now. I mean, I like these highlighters enough to be writing a review about, which I don’t generally bother doing even for the books I’m highlighting in. However, they are not without their little quirks.
1) As others have said, some of these are closer to marker than highlights. I think the dark blue and red are fine, but the purple is far, far too dark. However, I do find it helpful for drawing figures or coloring a line on a graph for my reference.
2) My biggest problem with these is the the ink used to print the Sharpie logo on the pens themselves smudges like mad and gets on everything. I’ve started rubbing the logos off them as soon as I buy a new pack so I don’t have this issue.
However, even with those issues, I won’t use other highlighters.
1) I love the consistent ink and the smoothness of the nibs.
2) I like the clip so I can attach them to the front of a binder for short periods.
3) I like that they aren’t the traditional thick shape so they fit into my smallish laptop bag more easily.
4) I also like that the tip isn’t too wide, since it’s almost the exact height of a line of text in my textbooks.
5) But of course, the retractable point is what really makes them great. I love not having to fuss with the cap when I hit a bit of text that needs no highlights. It also makes switching between colors a lot less of a chore (which I know sounds silly but when you are reading a few dozen cases a day, this becomes important).
Overall, in my opinion, if you need highlighters, these are the best to get. I think there could be improvements to the design, but they are still the best on the market.
21st Century Highlighter
Okay, I feel kind of silly writing a review for a highlighter pen, but really, this is NOT your daddy’s highlighter. How many times have you misplaced a highlighter’s cap–or worse yet, pulled one out of your pen cup/pencil box/junk drawer only to find it missing the cap and all dried out? That will never happen with this pen. Finally they figured out how to make a retractable highlighter. And it works! The tip is wide enough to sweep across a line of text, and narrow enough to draw a fine underline. And with five different colors, what more could we ask for?
Keeps the No-Smear Promise!
I am one who gets frustrated when the print is smeared by a highlighter, so I tried these Sharpie Accents with the hope (but not much confidence) that they would live up to their smear-guard hype. Well, it wasn’t hype — they really don’t smear! I’ve used them on HP Deskjet printouts, grocery store receipts, ballpoint pens, magazine print, and even paperback book print. One swipe of the Sharpie leaves no smear at all. Although it wasn’t needed, I tried an immediate second swipe over the fresh highlight and it left only the barest of smudge. The highlighters arrive in a nice little plastic storage case. The colors remain sharp and clear since they don’t pick up ink from the print. It isn’t a big thing, but the retractable nub is quite handy – I like not having to track down the pen tops after I’ve used the pen. I’ve very happy with the product and recommend it.
could be a 2, could be a 5: depends on what you need to do
Advantage: no top to lose; the marker point clicks out just like a ball point pen; somewhat thicker and taller than regular highlighters which makes it easier to grip and it will stand up in a shirt pocket; and it has the pocket clip attached to the body not a removable top. Easy to use, hard to lose marker or top.
Disadvantage: the marking tip is somewhat stiff and for some reason it is not so good on fine line edge marking. One cannot see how much ink is left.
Analysis: depends on what type of marking you do. At my job I go through markers marking sometimes just one line or two or a whole paragraph. My favorite it Bic BriteLiner; comfortable to hold, fine marking tip, and I can see how much ink is left (about once a month I throw out a marker because I have used up all the ink). I think the Sharpie would be great for someone who does not do a lot of marking or detailed marking. Definitely a must for those who lose marker tops.
Nice variety but still disappointing
By Matt London
I really like the variety of colors in this set. However, what is disappointing is that several colors are more “marker-like” than highliter. Once they dry, all colors are ok for being able to read the underlying text, but the indigo and purple are a little dark. These are more fine tipped than you big, normal highliter, but they do get the job done.
These are functional, but nothing to rave about.
