Kids learn how to properly position letters.

The Primary Composition Book is a great tool for kids' early creative writing needs. Each page features redline baseline cues and a dotted mid-line for optimum letter positioning. A narrow line width helps provide optimal pencil control.

Sheets are sewn into the notebook so they don't slip as kids work, for a stable writing surface. There are no left hand margins by design, so the entire page offers usable space.

The binding lays nice and flat, making it easier for left handers who often struggle learning to write around spiral bound or 3-ring bound sheets. The inside front cover features manuscript alphabet for reference.

  • Solid and dotted line primary ruling and narrow line width

  • Conforms to most handwriting methods

  • Durable cover with secure sewn binding

  • 100 sheets / 200 pages

  • 9.5 x 7.5 inch sheet size

Good book… NO VERTICAL MARGINS

By Lydia R.

Mead’s books and other products are usually strong/durable for use by kids and adults. That is the main reason I purchased this instead of the typical exercise books that are smaller and cheaper but easier to get damaged. So that’s not an issue here.

I’m including below information I wanted to know BEFORE I purchased:
1. This is the same product as Mead Primary Composition Book, Ruled, 100 Sheets/200 Pages (09902) …it is just listed as a set of 5 books (comes in a small tight box) instead of one book in the other listing.

2. It is actually like the picture. By the way, that 72900 item number does not exist on the Mead website; what you get is 5 units of 09902.

3. IT DOES NOT HAVE VERTICAL MARGINS!! This is the main reason why I gave it (and will be giving the single one) 4 Stars instead of 5. At K-2 age and beyond, children need the guide of at least the left vertical margin to line up their work and write question numbers, etc. It means that I have to go now and draw 3,000 lines (200 pages x 15 books) before school starts in September. JOY…I’m typing this and thinking 3 stars. Sigh.

4. The lines are "narrow" as they are actually 1/4 inch between the line pairs (i.e. the red and the dotted, the dotted and the high blue, the red and the low blue). So the page holds 12 red lines; but the last red line is less than 1/8 inch to the edge of the page, so low dropping letters may be problematic on that line. There is a larger margin at the top but to me it is not necessary – so this could be an improvement.

5. The pages are not bright white, but they are a comfortable white. Not glossy – it is to write on after all. I don’t know how to technically describe it. I’m satisfied with the color and thickness and overall page quality.

So that’s about it for now. I’m off to drawing left hand margins.

Great book BUT NO LEFT MARGIN

By Lydia R.

Mead’s books and other products are usually strong/durable for use by kids and adults. That is the main reason I purchased this instead of the typical exercise books that are smaller and cheaper but easier to get damaged. So that’s not an issue here.

I’m including below information I wanted to know BEFORE I purchased:
1. This is the same product as Mead Primary Composition Book, Grades K-2, 100 Wide-Ruled Sheets, 9.5 x 7.5 Inch Sheet Size, Pack of 5 (72900) …it is just listed as one book here and a set of 5 books (comes in a small tight box) in the other listing.

2. It is not actually like this picture – i.e. it is not black with white with blue designs; the picture of the back of the item is a closer representation of the coloring. What I received from Amazon (seller) is the exact blue colored unit from the picture used for the Pack of 5 (72900) (By the way, that 72900 item number does not exist on the Mead website; what you get is 5 units of 09902). My daughter is 7 years and did not want this black version with the Blue Palm Mascot as she said that was "childish and the children would laugh at me in school"…she requested the blue book and I bought one of these to compare.

Kindergarten School Supply Requirement

By TheBeehive

This K-2 Composition book was a requirement for my son entering Kindergarten this year. I searched high and low for this in stores but never, ever found it. I caved and ordered from Amazon.

As for the price, I was a little shocked to see how much one composition book can cost compared to the wide ruled you find in stores. Nearly $5 for one notebook seems steep, but I assume it will be used daily throughout the school year and its for my sons education so it is what it is.
What surprises me the most is that this is a mandatory school supply item and it simply cant be found ANYWHERE in stores, can anyone tell me why that is?

As other reviewers have stated, there is no left or right margin, something I do believe these notebooks should have so children can learn about proper letter placements and alignment. Mead, I can only assume that parents and teachers everywhere would really appreciate margins. Please change this?

I ordered the 1 pack and I received 1 notebook as expected. I will be ordering a multi-pack for my sons teacher for other students to use who were unable to locate these notebooks. Despite the cost, if these are beneficial to a child’s learning then I will happily buy more.

I’ve chosen to give this notebook a 4 star instead of 5 rating due to the lack of margins. Other than this fact, it’s a great notebook that will greatly benefit my son in his writing skills.

Lines are really too small for K-2

By Amazon Customer

The book itself is great and sturdy, but when I was looking for lined paper for my K to practice writing, I figured K-2 would be the wide lines. It wasn’t. It was wider than regular notebook paper and had the red and blue lines to help kids with upper and lower case, but if I gave this to her now, she would be frustrated.
I’m sure by next year it will be a great back to school gift for her.

As advertised

By I. Guch

It’s a composition book. Seriously, what’s to say about it. It didn’t change my life or anything, and I don’t feel thinner or sexier for having bought it.

Though I probably should, because I’m on a diet and I’ve lost 30 pounds. I’m certainly thinner, but since I’m ugly as hell, I’m probably not any sexier.

Perfect. My nephew doesn’t need clear space to draw

By M. Saenz

Perfect. My nephew doesn’t need clear space to draw, so i hesitated buy a bunch of different notebooks. He needs to practice his writing, and he can practice on this notebook. There are dotted rows top to bottom and back to front and for a great price too.
